19th World Orchid Conference® Artist's Bios

Three “commemorative” posters have also been chosen and will be released at intervals leading up to the highly-anticipated conference and its spectacular orchid show—“Orchids—Nature’s Masterpiece”®! Fred Caravetta

An Art Deco style poster created by well-known Miami graphic designer and sculptor, Fred Caravetta, was selected to publicize the event. This poster appeared in the September issue of Orchids Magazine and has been featured on the 19th World Orchid Conference® website. A yellow Cattleya with a red lip was chosen as the symbol of the conference and Fred also created a colorful globe logo adorned with this beautiful signature orchid.

Fred Caravetta’s work has been featured by the many of the nation’s most prestigious cruise lines including, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, SeaEscape, American Family Cruises, Costa Cruise Lines and Premier Cruise Lines for over 30 years. His illustrations and graphic designs appear in brochures, in advertising campaigns and promotional materials. A partial list of clients includes Centex Homes, Coconut Grove Bank, Ford Motor Co., Burger King Corp and he served as an art director at Pan American World Airways. Fred was recently commissioned to create a number of metal sculptures for a permanent “Madagascar Exhibit” and an “Insect Exhibit” at Fairchild Tropical and Botanical Gardens. Barbara Gaterman

Barbara Gaterman has been a member of the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society (FLOS) for over 25 years. During that time, Barbara has combined her love of orchid growing with her hobby of watercolor painting - and the outcome has been the design and creation of watercolor paintings of orchid flowers. To further increase her artistic skills, in 2004 she completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Design from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. Barbara has designed four of the recent FLOS orchid show posters and is honored to have her poster design selected for the 19th World Orchid Conference. “I have always been fascinated with orchids growing wild on palm trees, so along with green parrots in South Florida, they became the theme for my painting.”

She is a member of Fort Lauderdale's Gold Coast Watercolor Society and the Florida Watercolor Society. Her paintings can be found on-line at her website

Angela Mirro

Angela Mirro studied art at Parsons School of Design. She developed a career as a textile designer, while focusing on botanical watercolor paintings of orchids for seventeen years. Her textile clients include Polo Ralph Lauren and Lee Jofa Inc. She has also painted and exhibited watercolor landscapes.

Her work has been widely exhibited at venues such as: Longwood Gardens Centennial Exhibition, The Ashmolean Museum, The 7th International Juried Botanical Art Exhibit, The Royal Albert Memorial Museum,  The Highstead Arboretum, and The Club Peruano De Orquideas. Angela's work is also in many private collections and is included in The Shirley Sherwood Collection , London, England, The Brooklyn Botanic Garden Florilegium Society, Brooklyn, NY, The Atlanta Botanic Garden, Atlanta Georgia and that of The American Orchid Society’s Headquarters in Delray Beach, Florida.

Her paintings have appeared on the front covers of Orchids Magazine 2000 and The Orchid Digest 2001, as well as in the ‘Orchids in Art Series’ for Orchids Magazine 2001- 2004. Her paintings were also published in Dr. David Grove’s book titled ‘Vandas and Ascocendas’, Timber Press 1995. Over the past several years, she has given a slide presentation on 'Orchids in Art and Illustration' to local orchid societies and most recently at The Huntington Museum in San Marino, California for the Orchid Digest.
